Seizures

Seizures- This is a sudden excessive disorganized series of electrical changes in the brain, usually resulting in convulsive muscular activity and unconsciousness. There is a wide variety of seizures, but the most common is the grand mal or generalized.

Seizures are relatively common in dogs (rare in cats). The most common cause in dogs is epilepsy, which may have a heritable nature.

Seizures usually cause generalized convulsions in dogs characterized by impaired consciousness, symmetric stiffening, paddling or even loss of movement of the limb muscles. Most seizures are of short duration (less than a few minutes). A major danger of seizures is heat stroke in the case of a prolonged seizure event with lots of muscular activity. If you find your dog unconscious and panting, it may be suffering from heat stroke. Measure the rectal temperature. If the temp is higher than 104 degrees fahrenheit, then cooling down with cold wet compresses may be appropriate. And calling us ASAP.
